Zenith a tradition in watchmaking
Miami Beach | Coral Gables | Surfside | Aventura | Bal Harbour
Zenith is a very reputable and respected watchmaker, and the El Primero movement is considered the most accurate and reliable column-wheel chronograph movement nowadays. Most watch collectors appreciate this manufacturer and especially consider this very dependable movement as an important part, or a great addition to their collection. It works at 36,000 vibrations an hour, which means that the second hand is capable of moving 10 times per second providing a 1/10th of a second measurement of accuracy.
When introduced to the market in 1969, El Primero was a huge accomplishment at the time as it was the first fully integrated, high-frequency, very reliable automatic chronograph movement. This was no easy task as the day view of the watch was postponed several times due to technical difficulties till Zenith felt comfortable with the accuracy and dependability of his new caliber reference 3019 PHC mechanical creation.
El Primero means “The first one” in Esperanto and Spanish, hence the name as it was the first movement of this type to hit the market.
Our watchmakers always enjoy the challenge of working with an awesome complicated movement like this one.
The owner of this watch wears it every day, enjoying the looks and the precision. When swimming he noticed water intrusion and as he was very concerned, he started looking for a dependable service center. Gray and Sons was his first choice, and he was very lucky to have sent the watch to us immediately!
The water damage started to corrode and rust parts of the movement damaged the hour and minute hands, and stained the dial, if he had waited a few extra days, the damage would have been irreversible or extremely expensive to fix.
The owner loves the look and feel of this watch and he wanted to make sure that we did not compromise the value of the watch with a repair using non-original parts or not following manufacturers’ specifications to repair it, the cost to be affordable, and the time to fix it was not going to be for months.
Our Swiss watchmakers look into this job immediately, it was a priority set by the repair shop manager due to the nature of the damage and to avoid any further corrosion. This saved the owner a lot of money and assured that the original movement was saved.
Every movement is different and it is a different test to our technicians. At Gray & Sons, we make it personal to bring every timepiece back to its original splendor.
So the process began. The movement is removed. The dial, hands, and markers were cleaned and refinished. Our watchmaker disassembled the movement checking for signs of rust or corrosion and working immediately on those parts to avoid further damage.
Some parts were too damaged to be repaired, others we were lucky and able to clean, polish, and refurbished to its original quality. We cleaned all parts using a multi-stage process to remove dirt and old, dried lubricants to bring this great movement back to its original performance.
Meanwhile, case, bracelet, and buckle are sent to one of our highly specialized watch polishers to detail and buff up the stainless steel and gold to its original beauty.
This process so quickly read, takes approximately 15 working days to be achieved as no shortcuts are used, we, at Gray & Sons, only do this work the old-fashioned way of the antique watchmakers we learned from. Then, the movement is put back together to start working on the timekeeping accuracy, power reserve, chronograph functions, and synchronization of all the parts involved in this magnificent movement to keep time.
For the final checks, two specialists will test the power reserve of the movement manually, then check the power reserve using mechanical wheels for timekeeping and winding, regulating the movement to fine-tune it to perfection, and finally pressure testing machines to check for leaks on the seals and gaskets. This will take another 10 days.
The watch is almost ready to be shipped back and as a final stage, we will have another associate check everything all over again with new eyes and have these final tests done again once more before we ship it back to the owner.
