The Swiss watch this client trusted Gray and Sons Jewelers for polishing, buffing and detailing is a Cartier Santos 100 XL. This elegant time piece made by Cartier features a 42mm case. This watch in particular comes in a two tone variation; stainless steel case and gold bezel. Internally the movement is a Calibre 8630 Swiss automatic movement. The beautiful dial displays Roman numerals and chronograph with 3 subdials featuring 12 hour register, 30 minute register and independent seconds register.
Once the watch reaches our repair workshop, our master watchmaker disassembles the watch by removing the movement from its case. We make sure the Calibre 8630 is running smooth and oil is proper. At this point computers test amplitude and time keeping to ensure the watch is as precise as possible. If the watchmaker feels that the movement is in need of service our repair manager contacts the client and advises of the work needed. In this case, movement is running without problems.
The two tone case is handed to our expert polisher. He begins preparation by covering all sections that the buffering wheels cannot touch, such as the scratch resistant sapphire crystal. He then begins by light polishing the back-case of the watch. This process requires lots of care and precision considering the engraving on the back of the watch.
The process of buffing is used to repair damage to a case or bracelet due to normal wear from general use. Scratches, rubs and small dents are removed. By using a buffing wheel along with some buffing paste the expert ensures repair of all scratches and dents on the case while also achieving proper symmetry around all edges. Buffing and lap wheel constitutes only 90% of the process. The polisher now needs to clean all excess buffing paste by putting all pieces in an ultrasonic cleaner. The ultrasonic cleaning machine produces a high frequency pressure sound that creates cavitation bubbles. This process affects all contaminants attached to materials such as metals, glass and ceramics. The vibration and bubbles are capable of penetrating the smallest holes, crevices and cracks. The objective is to carefully and efficiently remove all buffing paste residue and dirt adhered to the case of the watch. After 10 minutes inside the ultrasonic cleaner, the cleaning process is finished by head steam cleaning each case and bracelet part with 80lbs of pressure.
For the last step of the process the newly cleaned and steams case is ran through a polishing wheel. This wheel together with some polishing paste makes it the last step in our process. The polisher assures that every single part of this case is polished and in factory finish. Once finished the parts are ultrasonic and steamed cleaned again. We dry parts under a heat lamp to evaporate moisture, leaving no spots. Only then we return the case to the master watchmaker to be assembled back before returning to the customer.
