Rolex Day-Date, An Overhaul Long Overdue
Every now and then, someone walks through our doors with a unicorn watch. When we say unicorn we don’t mean colorful and flashy, we mean a watch that is so rarely seen it almost seems like it's a replica.
As many Rolex experts know, the Rolex Day-Date ref. 1807 is typically found in 18k yellow gold, which is why we questioned the authenticity of this timepiece we serviced. However, as we delve more into the watch, we came to find that this vintage watch from the 1970s had an original movement, dial, case, and bracelet.
When the gentleman who owned this watch brought it in, he mentioned how this watch was passed down to him and hadn’t been serviced in over 10 years! Although the watchkept up its external appearance magnificently, the inside of the movement needed a long overdue lubrication and cleaning. Luckily for this gentleman, Gray and Sons was the perfect place to bring a Rolex for repair.

Our client made it clear he wanted this watch to end up looking and running like new, so we knew what we had to do. Upon receiving the watch we must first open the back of the watch to see if any damaged or old parts must be replaced prior to quoting the client with the repair cost. Once a diagnosis is done, a client's approval is needed to begin the 86-step repair process. This is where our swiss-trained watchmakers confirmed that the watch is an authentic Rolex timepiece.
In this repair, we noticed that the mainspring inside the movement was broken and needed replacement. Along with a broken mainspring, the movement had gone so long without lubrication that the gears got stuck due to all the friction.
Once the customer approved the repair, the process began with our watchmakers decasing the watch. Then, the movement, crystal, and watch stem is separated from the head and bracelet. The case and bracelet is given to our head polisher while our watchmakers begin working on the movement.
Piece by piece, our watchmaker begins dismantling the watch’s mechanism evaluating every piece. Once the watch parts that need replacing are identified, our watchmaker prepares the standing parts to be cleaned and sources the parts that need to be replaced. We use six different cleaning solutions in an ultrasonic machine to make sure all dirt, dust, and dried oils are extracted from every crevice within the watch parts.
Once the watch parts are cleaned, the watchmaker starts to reassemble the movement while adding lubricants wherever designated and replacing all the gaskets for water resistance. This tedious process usually takes around 1 to 2 hours per watch! Ofcourse, assuming the watchmaker isn’t interrupted and all parts continue functioning.
While the watchmaker is working on the movement, our head polisher begins his work on the exterior. Our polishers have a clear understanding of how this job must be done.
The 18k gold presidential link bracelet has a finished polish design that is specific and unique to Rolex. On the outer sections of the presidential bracelet, the links have a satin finish while the center section of these links carry a high polish shiny finish. The head of the watch is polished to a satin finish so the lugs seamlessly flow into the bracelet.
Once our watchmaker puts together the movement and re-cases the watch, it's time for the final steps of our repair process. Prior to returning the client their watch, we must execute a final quality control process to assure the watch is running as accurately as possible.
In this quality control, we measure the watch’s amplitude and water resistance using special machines that listen to the heartbeat of the watch and simulate a deep plunge using air pressure to check for leaks. If both amplitude and water test come out good, the watch gets put on our winding wheel for observation where it rotates and mimics the movement of the wrist.
With this machine we can analyze the power reserve on the watch and make sure the automatic is providing power up to par throughout the day. Our entire repair process usually takes around 3 to 6 weeks total.
