Overhaul & Detail - Glashutte Senator Moon Phase Watch Repair at Gray & Sons Jewelers
Less acclaimed yet still highly ranked, Glashutte is one of Swatch Group’s hidden gems which doesn’t get the recognition it truly deserves. Masters of precision, design, and engineering, the watch models in Glashutte’s inventory are broad and inclusive.
Watches in groups such as the Senator Moon Phase collection are one of the few models making Glashutte a competitor for brands like Breguet, Jaeger LeCoultre, Patek Philippe, and Vacheron Constantin.
Aside from its elegance and versatility, the Calibre 36 movement in this timepiece surprisingly only uses 1 barrel to hold an astonishing 100-Hour Power Reserve This means the watch can keep accurate time for at least 4 days without needing to be picked up or wound.
Along with the time, the dial displays a power reserve gauge, a square date window, and a half-circle moon phase window. Best of all, this watch’s case-back carries a sapphire crystal, allowing one to admire the beauty of Glashutte’s watchmaking and engineering.
Senator Moon Phase watch is the perfect staple for any occasion.

Gray & Sons - Top Watch Repair Service Center For High Caliber Watches
This watch came to Gray and Sons through a client looking to sell their Glashutte Senator Moon Phase 39-44-03-11-04 18k yellow gold watch. Although the watch hadn’t been heavily worn, it had gone longer than 5 years without service. Factories recommend everyone service automatic watches every 3-5 years to upkeep the quality of the watch’s timekeeping.
Many have been curious to get a full breakdown of what exactly happens to a watch in an overhaul and detail. When we service a watch, it includes the dismantling and servicing of the watch’s inner mechanism along with cleaning and polishing of the watch’s outer case, steel buckle, and rubber bracelet. Sounds simple when said like this, however, servicing a watch is an extremely long and tedious process.
First things first, we open the case back of the watch and look for any rusted or damaged parts that need sourcing. In this case, the movement was in good condition, it was just due for some cleaning and relubricating.
Once we’ve diagnosed the problem on the watch and know if and what extra watch parts are needed, our watchmaker takes apart the watch piece by piece and prepares it for overhauling.
The watch movement, crystal , and watch stem are separated from the head and strap. The case and buckle are given to our head polisher while our watchmakers begin working on the movement. Piece by piece, our watchmaker begins dismantling the watch’s mechanism and evaluating every piece.
Once the watch parts that need sourcing are identified, our watchmaker prepares the timepiece’s screws, springs, pivots, and plates to be cleaned and sources the parts that are needed. We use six different cleaning solutions in an ultrasonic machine to make sure all dirt, dust, and dried oils are extracted from every crevice within the watch parts.
Once the watch parts are cleaned, the watchmaker starts to reassemble the movement while adding lubricants wherever designated and replacing all the gaskets for water resistance.
This tedious process usually takes anywhere from two to five hours per watch! Of course, assuming the watchmaker isn’t interrupted and all parts continue functioning.
While Gray and Sons’ watchmaker worked on the movement, we had our polisher give this watch a light polish around the case to remove the minor scratches. He then put the case in our ultrasonic machine for a bath and finally to rinse and dry.
Once our watchmaker puts together the movement and re-cases the watch, it's time for the final steps of our repair process. Prior to returning the client their watch, we must execute a final quality control process to ensure the watch is running as new as possible.
In this quality control, we measure the watch’s amplitude using special machines that listen to the heartbeat of the watch. We also test the watch’s water resistance with a machine that simulates a deep plunge using air pressure to check for leaks.
Additionally, we check that all complications are functioning fully; in this case the hour and minute hands, date window, moon-phase indicator, and power reserve. If both timekeeping and water tests pass, the watch gets put on our winding wheel for observation where it rotates and mimics the movement of the wrist for 6-8 hours. The watch must then rest and run for the next 80-100 hours; this ensures the automatic rotor that powers the reserve is at optimal performance.
Also, with this machine, we can analyze the durability of the watch and make sure the movement is functioning and not startled by any natural jagged movements of the wrist. Our complete restoration process can take up to 8 weeks.
