It is stimulating for our watchmakers to be able to work on such a beautiful and unique Rolex watch involved in a story very hard to believe.
This story is so incredible that if you watch it on TV, you would just say ’Who can believe this?”
So let's start from the beginning, the owner of this tank of a watch did not want to enter the supermarket wearing such a flashy Rolex President on his wrist, with this in mind he removed the watch and placed it in his pocket. He completely forgot about it while shopping and when he left, removing the car keys, accidentally dropped the watch at the parking lot of a busy supermarket.
When he got home and remembered about the watch, he thought it was lost, and took it as a loss at the beginning of the miraculous holiday season.
Nothing could be farther from the truth. Without him knowing it, he was going to be blessed twice.
Two days later a friend cals him and asked about his beautiful and personalized Rolex watch.
He started explaining about the terrible loss and his friend told him not to be so sad and to come to the front door, when he did, he saw his smiling friend holding in his hands his destroyed and beloved Presidential Rolex…
He was very happy to have it and so sad to look at the terrible condition of the watch that had been run over by a car.
Then the second blessing happened when he shared this story with another friend and he referred him to Gray and Sons Jewelers.
He called, spoke to the manager, and explained what happened and gave an overview of the condition of the watch.
He was told not to panic, that he was in good hands and he brought the watch for service.

Rolex has a very well built case, made of a single piece of gold, robust and strong, we knew it but we have never seen anything like this before.
Considering that the watch had been run over by a car, the condition of the watch was still surprisingly looking good.
This is a complicated Swiss movement with intricate features mounted inside an solid 18k gold case.
At plain sight, the weight of the car had bent the deployment clasp and damaged the bracelet.
The diamond bezel was bent and cracked too, the crystal was gone, crown, hands, and dial were severely damaged.
The case was however flattened and out of its original round shape.
When the watch was opened to review the movement we realized how good and strong a Rolex watch is. It had a smashed ruby jewel, the second sweep hand wheel destroyed and a few wheels were damaged, it was full of glass debris but still believe it or not, in one piece. This speaks highly about this manufacturer.
Our Swiss-trained watchmakers and jewelers took the job with great passion, we had many meetings and discussions in regards to the best way to proceed and repair the watch at a cost that made sense to the owner. Our teamwork, experience, and ingenuity kept challenging each one of us for days in a row.
This was a unique opportunity for our watchmakers and jewelers to show the quality of their workmanship and teamwork.
Even the owner, Keith Gray, was involved and his 40 years of experience and input were very important to complete the job successfully and in the time frame we promised.
This was an incredible challenge, and we, at Gray & Sons, make it personal to bring every timepiece back to its original splendor, and we enjoy doing it following the traditions of the Haute Swiss Horology, not skipping any difficult work and not taking shortcuts.
So, the process begins, the movement is removed and completely disassembled down to its bare components.
Parts will be put through a multiple-stage cleaning process that will use three different solutions to wash away broken crystals and parts, dirt, and old dried lubricants accumulated through the years. We will look at all the parts and replace the damaged ones, then reassemble the watch piece by piece, wheel by wheel, screw by screw, and apply four different synthetic oils to get the watch running perfectly.
Meanwhile, our jewelers will carefully work to repair and reshape the damaged case and the bezel, so they will fit together again correctly.
One of our Swiss-trained master watchmakers will look into the assembled movement and will replace gaskets to assure water resistance.
At the same time, our Rolex Presidential bracelet repair team will work their magic with the smashed links and clasp.
Not an easy task, it requires patience, timing, experience, and teamwork to make this complete miracle happen.
When the case, bracelet, and buckle are repaired, they will be sent to one of our highly experienced watch polishers to detail and buff up the gold to its original beauty.
Our watchmakers are specialists in Swiss manufactured simple or complicated movements.
They have trained for years getting to know all the parts and how to better correct and prevent malfunctions and regulate the accuracy of timekeeping.
So, while the watch is being polished, the master watchmaker in charge will observe the movement work.
We, at Gray & Sons, only do this the old-fashioned way of the antique watchmakers, time-consuming, maybe, but we will make sure that it will keep time as it was designed to. The movement is put together again to start working on the regulation, timekeeping accuracy, power reserve, and synchronization of all the parts involved for this magnificent movement to keep time.
Then the watch will be re-cased, and for the final checks, two specialists, separately, will test the power reserve of the movement manually, will use winding wheels too, and finally will use pressure testing machines to check for leaks on the seals and gaskets recently installed.
The watch is almost ready to be shipped back and as a final stage, we will have another associate check everything all over again with new eyes and have these final tests done once more before we give it back to the happy owner.
