l.C. Grandjean Pocket Watch Repair
Before we wore our watches on our wrist, there was a period in time when these precious timekeeping instruments were stored in our pockets and exposed only when necessary to record events and know what time it was in the day. Pocket watches may not carry the appeal they once did when explorers and scientists utilized them in their daily activities, but they're a great example of heritage from which modern watches derived their characteristics from. L. C. Grandjean was definitely at the forefront of watches in their time. Henri Grandjean began watchmaking in the early 1800s. In 1830, his company was designing ship's chronometers modeled on English chronometers. His business partners Edouard Thevenaz along with Louis Jean Richard and Ulysse Nardin Grandjean collaborated to originate the Swiss marine chronometer production for the company. Their cases were produced for the Spanish and South American markets. They were among the most exquisite cases in the whole region with amazing goldwork and engraving which is what pocket watches distinguished themselves from other companies at the time.

We here at Gray and Sons gasp at the opportunity to be able to service and repair such a pioneer in the watch world with these vintage pocket watches coming through our workshop. We recently had the opportunity to restore one of these L. C. Grandjean chronographs in house. We received this pocket watch with a faulty chronowheel which required our in house watchmakers with more than 150 years of combined experience to fabricate to working condition. The pivot of this particular wheel had snapped off and would seize the watches movement causing it to not run correctly or at all. This L. C. Grandjean has a beautiful 1833 production engraving with Locle also engraved on the inner gold movement cover. Our in-house watchmakers and polishers with took upon themselves to return this vintage pocket watch to its original specifications. To begin the process, our master watchmaker carefully disassembles the case to separate the movement from the container housing all of the casing components. The case is then sent to our polisher for case refinishing to restore the luster of this Grandjean. Now with the movement carefully out of the watch case, our master watchmaker begins disassembling the components piece by piece. During which they are meticulously inspecting each part for wear or damage to properly ensure the lifespan of the service.

This particular repair required our skilled watchmaker to fabricate an exact measured pivot for the chrono wheel on our lathe by hand. A steel stock is turned down to the exact diameter to which is within the tolerance of its original counterpart. Many measurements are performed during the process to ensure the proper working functions of the piece when assembled back into the movement. The piece is heat-treated to preserve its stability and longevity for the life of the watch. The rest of the components gently placed into our ultrasonic cleaner which will use vibration in three different solutions. During the process, old coagulated oil is dissolved and components are cleaned and returned to their original clean state. Once the movement parts are dried our master watchmaker begins assembly by carefully putting together each component in their appropriate order while checking pivot end shakes and freedom for accurate function. During reassembly, the watchmaker uses synthetic oils to lubricate each point of friction and rotation to ensure the longevity of the service. Movement is then tested for timing accuracy and amplitude to ensure all proper adjustments were made during the reassemble process. With a freshly clean and regulated movement, it is time to return the movement into its beautiful refinished case where it will again be checked for functionality and display. Watch will then be put on time and quality controlled over the course of 1-2 weeks to observe its power reserve and automatic system. Gray and Sons is proud to be your choice for all vintage watches for service and repair to return your timepiece to its original working condition.
