The Cartier Tank Américaine 2023, What’s New?
Cartier chose to breathe new life into the Tank collection by releasing a new line of Tank Américaine watches in 2023. The new 2023 Cartier Tank Americaine watches retain much of the same look as their predecessors, yet benefit from a handful of updates.
Let’s have a closer look at the new Cartier Tank Americaine watches to see what’s changed from the previous versions.
Brief History of the Cartier Tank Americaine
The first Cartier Tank watch was introduced by Louis Cartier in 1917, inspired by the tanks used during World War I. Namely, the watch featured a unique rectangular case that resembled the shape of a tank. The clean lines and geometric design of the watch made it a departure from the round pocket watches that were popular at the time. Over the years, Cartier introduced various iterations of the Tank watch, each with its own distinct features and designs.
Introduced in 1987, the Tank Américaine watch was based on the Tank Cintrée timepiece, incorporating its signature curved case design. However, unlike the Tank Cintrée, the Tank Americaine features a flat caseback. What’s more, the Tank Americaine introduced the first adjustable strap specifically for a folding buckle.
While the Tank Americaine was initially only offered in yellow gold, Cartier eventually expanded the collection to include various materials and even introduced the first steel Tank Americaine watches in 2017. Aside from material options, Cartier has made various Tank Americaine versions including time-only, date, chronographs, moon phase, and more.
What Changed with 2023 Tank Americaine Watches?
The new Tank Américaine still maintains a larger profile compared to other Tank models, yet everything has been refined and slimmed down ever so slightly. Furthermore, Cartier has restructured the sizes into three categories rather than four: mini, small, and large — the medium Tank Americaine is no longer in production.
- Tank Americaine Mini: 28 x 15.2mm
- Tank Americaine Small 35.4 x 19.4mm
- Tank Americaine Large 44.4 x 24.4mm
All the new models are time-only watches. The Large is available in steel or rose gold, both fitted with leather straps and powered by the new caliber 1899 MC, which according to Cartier is thinner than its previous automatic movements. The Small is available in steel with a leather strap, rose gold with a leather strap, rose gold and diamonds with a leather strap, and rose gold and diamonds with a rose gold bracelet. Finally, the Mini is available in the same configurations as the Small but with the addition of a white gold version entirely paved in diamonds. The Small and Mini variants of the new Cartier Tank Americaine watches run on quartz movement.
So what’s changed really with the new Tank Americaine collection? Not very much in fact; think of it more as a refresh rather than a redesign. In short, there’s not much difference between the previous Tank Americaine watches and the new ones. If anything, the line used to be more varied with additional sizes, materials, and complications to choose from. So let’s have a look at some fantastic options from the older collection.
