Every year The New York Times puts out a magazine dedicated to luxury watches –  if you haven’t seen it you should definitely check it out.  While perusing this year’s edition, I came across an article entitled Playing for Keeps, which discusses the importance of regularly servicing your watch.  The article is centered around Patek Philippe, whose motto is “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. With this level of trust comes a certain degree of responsibility.  To keep the watch running and in excellent condition it needs to be regularly serviced every three to five years.

This notion may seem fairly obvious, but many watch owners wait until the watch stops running before having it serviced.  In order to ensure that the watch remains in excellent running condition, you have to think of the watch the same way you do your car – especially since some luxury watches cost as much, if not more than some automobiles!  Your car needs an oil change every 6 months or 3,000 miles; whichever comes first.  Even if the car is running smoothly and has not given you any trouble, you still need to get the oil change done now to ensure that the car maintains its excellent performance.

Think of your watch in the same capacity.  With automatic and manual watches, the watch’s engine runs 24 hours per day (that’s a lot more than most car engines!)  So it makes sense that the watch would need a “tune-up”  every so often.  Servicing your watch every 3-5 years is a worthwhile investment considering most luxury watches will last a lot longer than your automobile!
