Three New Breitling Watches from Baselworld 2017

Breitling Navitimer Rattrapante

Arguably the most famous Breitling model, the Navitimer has been a mainstay for the brand since its debut in 1952. And now for 2017, Breitling has chosen the Navitimer to introduce the brand’s first in-house split-seconds chronograph movement—Manufacture Breitling Caliber B03. Protected by a couple of patents to improve energy efficiency and precision, the chronometer-certified automatic B03 movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) with a power reserve of 70 hours.

On the Breitling Navitimer Rattrapante, there are two central chronograph hands. The red one is the main chronograph hand while the other is the split-seconds hand. Essentially, the split-seconds hands can be used to measure split times and then “catch-up” (rattraper in French) with the chronograph hand that is still in motion. To emphasize the inseparable relationship between these two hands on a rattrapante complication, Breitling placed the “B” at the base of the chronograph hand and the anchor at the base of the split-seconds hand. As a result, the full logo only comes together when both hands are at the zero position.

In terms of styling, the new Breitling Navitimer Rattrapante sports a 45mm case, in either stainless steel or red gold. The red gold version of the Navitimer Rattrapante is actually limited to only 250 pieces. The precious metal version also includes a transparent caseback for a view of the new B03 caliber.

Breitling Superocean Héritage II

To commemorate the model’s 60th anniversary, Breitling presents a revamped version of their iconic diver’s watch with the Breitling Superocean Héritage II. The main update includes a new steel bezel that includes a ceramic ring rather than the original metal ring. We see ceramic details appear more and more on today’s luxury watches since the material is appealing not only for its looks, but also for its super robust qualities. With this subtle change, the face of the Breitling Superocean Héritage II offers a seamless color marriage of bezel and dial.

As an homage to early models of the Superocean collection, the dial houses a triangular-tipped hour hand, a sword-shaped minute hand, and cone-shaped indexes. There are two sizes of the new Breitling Superocean Héritage II (42mm and 46mm) and three colors (black, blue, and bronze). Furthermore, there’s a chronograph version of the 46mm edition.

While the external changes may be subtle, the inner workings are anything but. Beating at the heart of the new Superocean Héritage II three-hander watches is the new automatic Caliber B20, with 70 hours of power reserve. The basis of the Breitling Caliber B20 is actually the Tudor Caliber MT5612. In a surprising move, Breitling and Tudor are sharing resources to develop specific mechanical movements for both brands.

On the other hand, the Superocean Héritage II Chronographe 46 runs on the faithful Breitling B13 automatic movement. The B13 caliber beats at 28,800vph and offers a power reserve of 42 hours.

Breitling Avenger Hurricane Military

An oversized watch to say the least, the new Breitling Avenger Hurricane Military chronograph sports an immense 50mm case. The case is in fact fashioned from the brand’s new material dubbed Breitlight. Not only is Breitlight 3.3 times lighter than titanium and 5.8 times lighter than steel, but it’s also much harder than both. Plus, the new high-tech material is also resilient to scratching, corrosion, and temperature changes. What’s more, Breitlight is also anti-magnetic and hypoallergenic.

In true military form, the dial features an exclusive 24-hour display rather than the more traditional 12-hour one. Also, to evoke a touch of vintage appeal, Breitling used a patina-like hue for the luminescence. This is done to mimic what happens to vintage watches over time.

The COSC-certified Breitling Caliber B12 automatic movement drives the new Breitling Avenger Hurricane Military watch. It’s interesting to note that the movement tells the time in a 24-hour format. Limited to only 1,000 pieces, we’re pretty sure this Breitling beast will sell out fast.
