A Look Back at the 2017 Rolex Two-Tone Sky-Dweller Watch

Prior to this year, the Sky-Dweller was exclusively available in 18k yellow, white or Everose pink gold, making it one of the most expensive current Rolex watches to own. However, to the delight of many Rolex fans around the world, the brand unveiled two lower-priced Sky-Dweller models–one in stainless steel with an 18k white gold fluted bezel and the other in two-tone yellow gold and stainless steel.

The Rolesor two-tone combination of yellow gold and stainless steel continues to be a signature look for Rolex watches and it carries over well to the Sky-Dweller model. Like other Sky-Dweller variations, the Rolex Two-Tone Sky-Dweller ref. 326933 sports a generous 42mm Oyster case–which is on the larger size for Rolex watches. The stainless steel case is topped with the ubiquitous yellow gold fluted bezel along with the matching yellow gold screw-down winding crown. Furthermore, the famous Oyster bracelet includes solid yellow gold center links flanked by stainless steel outer links.

The dial is where the Sky-Dweller really flaunts its ability. One of the most complex contemporary Rolex watches to date, the Sky-Dweller combines dual time zones with an annual calendar function. As a result, not only can the wearer keep track of an additional time zone thanks to the off-center 24-hour disc, the Sky-Dweller also displays the date via the window at 3 o’clock and the month by 12 apertures running along the periphery of the dial. Moreover, as an annual calendar, the Sky-Dweller only needs to be manually adjusted once a year on March 1st. This particular Rolex Two-Tone Sky-Dweller ref. 326933 includes a champagne dial, which is a classic choice for a Rolesor Rolex.

Rolex Caliber 9001

While the Rolex Two-Tone Sky-Dweller ref. 326933 is certainly a complex piece of machinery, it’s wonderfully easy to use and practical to wear. At the heart of the timepiece is the Rolex Cal. 9001 automatic mechanical movement. Particularly interesting is the role of the bezel. Rather than just a decorative element, the Sky-Dweller’s bezel can be turned to one of three positions to select the date, local time or second time zone. Each position is then adjusted via the winding crown. Complex in operation but downright user-friendly.

The Rolex Cal. 9001 offers a power reserve of 72 hours. Plus, similar to most other modern Rolex Oyster models, the Sky-Dweller ref. 326933 is water resistant to 330 feet (100 meters). Since the brand redefined their Superlative Chronometer certification in 2015, the Rolex Two-Tone Sky-Dweller ref. 326933 boasts an accuracy rating of −2/+2 seconds per day. That’s double the requirement set out by COSC to achieve chronometer status!

Launched in 2012, the Rolex Sky-Dweller is the brand’s newest collection. And given the fact that the new Rolex two-tone Sky-Dweller 326933 lowers the entry cost of the Sky-Dweller family, it’s a welcome addition indeed. A superb blend of recognizable Rolex aesthetics and technical mastery, the two-tone Sky-Dweller is well on its way to establishing itself as a modern classic.
