A Baselworld 2017 Wishlist

ARTICLE DATE 01/05/2017

With SIHH around the corner and so many interesting releases announced already, it’s safe to say that 2017 will be an exciting year for the watch world. And while SIHH is significant in many ways, watch enthusiasts typically gravitate towards the larger, show stopping releases that take place at Baselworld. Sure it’s still a while away, but it’s never too early to start with (slightly) geeky watch speculation and the new year has arrived. This year, we want to share a few watches that we’d love to see at the show. We’ve got Nomos Glashutte, Omega and Rolex watches on our Baselworld 2017 wishlist. What’s on yours?

Rolex GMT Master II with Ceramic “Pepsi” Bezel in Stainless Steel

When Rolex announced the release of the GMT Master II ref. 116719 BLRO in 2014, it created some serious commotion. It was the first time Rolex had released a GMT master with the blue/red bezel color scheme in quite a while. The dividing factor however, was that it was also in 18k white gold. This paired it with a serious price tag and left enthusiasts wondering whether or not that kind of case material was really a good choice for such a legendary tool watch. This year, a stainless steel iteration would undoubtedly bring down the house and most likely result in the most popular GMT release since the GMT Master II ref. 116710 BLNR.

Rolex Sea Dweller 1967 – 2017 Anniversary Release

We all know that Rolex likes to honor its anniversaries with some pretty incredible releases. One of the most special and popular models is the controversial “Hulk” sub with its striking all green design. It should be no different for the Sea-Dweller since 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the model’s release. It can be seen as the Submariner’s big brother and represents some incredible achievements for Rolex in terms of dive watch design and technology. Seeing any kind of Sea-Dweller model refreshed or improved is always welcome and it remains one of the most technically awe-inspiring watches Rolex has ever created. Rolex should have something amazing in store for the Sea-Dweller and fans are waiting patiently.

An Annual Calendar from Nomos Glashütte

While they aren’t typically considered to exist within the realm of high luxury, it’s impossible to ignore that Nomos is a brand that deserves the recognition they’ve attained in recent years. They bring in-house design and construction to a completely new price point and nail the essential Bauhaus-inspired look that watch lovers have come to know so well. To see them apply their design philosophy to something completely out of the box for them would really shake things up and get even more people paying attention. But hey if not, we’ll take a chronograph too!

Omega Speedmaster 60th Anniversary Edition

Omega really turned heads with the latest versions in its Planet Ocean series last year. They’ve been known to crank out multiple special editions all at once while keeping watch enthusiasts talking. With such an important Omega anniversary upon us, it’ll be great to see something to commemorate the mighty 1957 Speedmaster. Sure there’s no shortage of Speedmaster models available now, but you can never have too much of a good thing.
