The first major event of the year for the watchmaking industry, the Richemont-led Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), saw a significant shift in 2017. Following a challenging year for the luxury watch market, January’s exhibition — featuring new brands, innovative materials, reworked classics, and the latest trends — demonstrated that the haute horology sector is nothing if not resilient. Among these envelope-pushing trendsetters was Officine Panerai, which unveiled new Panerai Watches for 2017.

In addition to featuring the new in-house automatic P.9010 caliber, two of the pieces out of the five that we outline here are also significant because they boast a never-before-seen detail for the traditionally hefty Luminor Submersible — they are sized at just 42 mm.

With roots that date back to 1956 with the creation of L’Egiziano, a watch exclusively made by Officine Panerai for the Egyptian Navy, the new Luminor Submersible line draws inspiration from the brand’s history, while being technically innovative and forward-looking.
Sporting the classic Panerai Submersible design, water-resistance to 300 meters (apart from the red gold model, which is resistant to 100 meters), and — thanks to luminous dial markers — unrivalled visibility even at great depth or in the dark, the Luminor Submersible 1950 collection offers solid dive watches. And ever with the professional diver in mind, these timepieces also house a trademarked lever device that protects the winding crown and a Panerai patented system where the watch’s unidirectional rotating bezel includes a graduated scale for calculating the start time of immersion.
Indeed, with the ability to withstand diving at depths of at least 100 meters and having a system to control the time of immersion, Panerai’s Luminor Submersible watches meet the ISO 6425 standard that defines a Divers Watch.
Panerai has introduced — via this line of watches — the new automatic P.9010 caliber movement, which was entirely developed in the manufacture’s home in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Made up of 200 components including 31 jewels, the automatic P.9010 caliber includes a power reserve of three days, stored in two spring barrels that are wound by an oscillating weight operating in both directions.
Featuring a central hour and minute hands, a small seconds dial at 9 o’clock, and the date at 3 o’clock, the P.9010 caliber’s hours can be conveniently adjusted without interfering with the minute hand’s movement. A function that is particularly useful when changing time zones or moving between summertime and wintertime, the adjustment of the hour hand is also connected to the watch’s date indicator.

Special Edition – Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic Bronzo – 47 mm
The Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic Bronzo (PAM00671) is the third Panerai to be made entirely of bronze. Donning a similar look to its predecessors, this version features a bold blue dial as opposed to the green one seen previously. With a case of 47 mm, offering water-resistance to 30 bar, and paired with a dark brown Ponte Vecchio calf leather, the Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic Bronzo is limited to just 1,000 pieces.
Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic Oro Rosso – 42 mm
The Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic Oro Rosso (PAM00684) made waves upon its release for being the first Panerai Submersible watch to feature a 42mm case making it perfect for everyday wear. This smaller timepiece sports a red gold case, black dial, and a matt black ceramic rotating bezel. The dive watch — water resistant to 100 meters — is finished off with a robust black rubber strap to complete its sophisticated yet sporty look.
Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic Acciaio – 42 mm
The Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic Acciaio (PAM00682) is the second new Luminor Submersible to feature a 42 mm diameter case; however, its stainless steel case enables it to have water-resistance of up to 300 meters. Similar to the Oro Rosso model in its features, this watch’s stainless steel alloy is hypoallergenic and highly resistant to corrosion, making it ideal for contact with the skin, as well as immersion in seawater.
Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic Titanio – 47 mm
The Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic Titanio (PAM01305) is the most similar to the classic design of the Luminor Submersible. With a case made entirely out of titanium, this lightweight metal (40% lighter than steel!) offsets the watch’s large size. Paired with a water-resistance of up to 300 meters and excellent resilience to corrosion and external shocks, it’s no wonder that this is the ideal watch for professional divers.
Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Amagnetic Automatic Titanio – 47 mm
The Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Amagnetic Automatic Titanio (PAM01389) is the newest version of the first anti-magnetic watch produced by Panerai. Though visually similar to the PAM01305, this model stands apart because of its anti-magnetic feature which means that it is highly resistant to magnetic fields of up to 40,000 A/m — a limit that is more than eight times higher than what is required by International Standards. This has resulted in a watch that is more than prepared to take on the knocks of daily life not to mention the challenges of technical diving.
